NYC Day 2 – Pizza!

Pizza is synonymous with New York City. There is nothing quite like eating a slice of pizza in the City whether it’s from a vendor or it’s your pre-theater dinner at John’s Pizzeria. They say that it’s the water that makes New York pizza crust the best in the world.

Last night, Scott and I took the kids to Pizza Galleryfor their 50% pizza and calzone night.  It is my favorite pizzeria in town because of the variety of crusts, sauces, and toppings they offer. However, most of the time we make our own pizza at home. I pick up some of the whole wheat dough balls from Pizza Gallery and freeze them so we have them on hand. The kids still just prefer cheese, but I dress it up a bit more for Scott and me. He likes tomatoes, ground turkey, ham, and fresh herbs. I love veggies on mine so sometimes I make my own mini pie with a whole wheat pita pocket. This is also a super quick way to satisfy that pizza craving when you are crunched for time.

Pizza often gets a bad rap for being an unhealthy meal. But if you can find a whole grain crust to use, buy part-skim mozzarella cheese, top with veggies and/or lean protein, and serve with a salad, you really have a well-balanced meal.
