Shamrock Smoothie

Here is a great smoothie that you can make to celebrate the luck ‘o the Irish! Don’t let the spinach scare you- it does not alter the taste of the sweet fruits in this!

Shamrock Green Smoothie

2 kiwis, peeled

1 medium apple, peeled, cored, and quartered

1 large banana (peeled of course!)

1 handful spinach leaves

1 cup almond milk

2 Tablespoons honey

Place all ingredients in a blender and mix until thoroughly blended. This makes about 2, 8 oz servings.

Cooking Up Spring Vegetables

Now that you know what’s in season, it’s time to start cooking! Here are some great recipes utilizing those fruits and veggies. The asparagus, peas, and basil would be a great St. Patty’s Day side. (I would replace the butter with olive oil.)

20% off Larabar Order!

Now until March 23rd, you can get 20% off  an order of Larabars. I love the lemon and key lime flavor, but often only see them at Whole Foods. Click here and use the code LARBIGL11 to get the discount.

Finding Out What’s ‘In Season’ in Your Area

Sustainable Table offers great information for what produce is in season in your city. Simply put in your state and click on which month you want. It even narrows it down to early in the month or later in the month. It gives you a list of what should be available, and you can then select which fruit/veggie you want, and it brings up nutritional information about it and even how to store it. And while you’re visiting, you can also find out where your local farmer’s market is.

Springing Forward=Afternoon Napping

I do believe that when Ben Franklin decided on implementing daylight savings, he either did not have children or was not responsible for tending to them. Whether springing forward or falling back, the time change always throws me and my children for a loop. I have a feeling that most of us will try to find some time today to sneak in a nap. From improving alertness to providing a mental escape, napping has some great benefits.

Log On Before Dining Out

Ahhh, the weekend! ‘Tis the time to dine out! If I open my menu when we go to a restaurant, my husband often makes a “why are you bothering?” remark. That is because he knows that I already got online and downloaded the menu. My purpose? I am looking for items that are the healthiest picks. I avoid anything fried, served in heavy sauces, and the like. I look for grilled, baked, or broiled lean proteins and find out what side items are available. Most chain restaurants offer you the nutritional information on their selections. I love Outback’s website. They offer a great interactive tool that allows you to choose different items and see the “end result” of your given meal. From the main course to dressings and toppings, you can get a clear idea of just how much you are consuming. If you take the extra time beforehand, you can make dining out a healthy and guiltless experience!

Energy Bars

I love to make Ellie Krieger’s energy bars! They are moist and easy to freeze so you can have them on hand when you need them. And my kids love them! Just toss everything into the food processor, press into a pan, and bake.

However, when I run out or don’t have time to make them, my alternative is the Larabar (Lemon is my favorie!). They are made with fruit and nuts and spices or naural flavoring- NOTHING ELSE! At just a bit over $1 a bar and about 220 calories, it’s the perfect snack.

All Natural Health and Beauty Products

Delicious Living has just put out their 2011 health and beauty awards list. I have fairly recently begun to change from using typical beauty products to natural ones. The main reason I switch is because of the potential health hazards of the chemicals found in the average product. I avoid using anything that contains parabens and sodium lauryl/laureth sulfates. You can google these substances and find out the origin of them and some of the safety concerns they present. While the jury is still out on the effects of these chemicals within the body (you will find evidence going both ways), the one thing we do know is that they are engineered substances that permeate the skin.  I would rather play it safe, and use soaps, lotions, etc. that have natural-based ingredients.

I know some of these products can be on the pricey side. Whenever I go to Whole Foods, I stock up on their store brand (365) shampoo, conditioner, body soap, and lotion. They are a great deal! I also forgo typical facial moisturizer. I was using just a bit of olive oil, but now I use grapeseed oil on my face. Since a little goes a long way, this is a lot cheaper than buying a commercialized lotion. My theory is that most products out there have way too many ingredients in them that I am unfamiliar with, so I would rather just go with those ingredients that I know actually exist in a plant (God’s creation) rather than those processed in a plant (man’s creation).
