Speaking of my Crazy Schedule…

calendar-icon

In my “Downsizing” post earlier this week, I mentioned that this Saturday, July 27th would be my final set-up at the Indialantic Fresh Market. Well, since Scott’s one summer class has been overwhelming and it ends this week, we decided to celebrate with our only family “vacation” this summer and head out of town for Friday and Saturday. This means I am pushing back my last farmer’s market appearance until next Saturday, Aug. 3rd. Thanks for understanding!!

A Big Decision to Downsize

downsize

Saturday morning, this verse was part of my Bible reading:

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matt. 6:21

This was another confirmation of a decision I made several weeks ago – one to downsize my hummus business. I always said that if business interfered with my relationship with the Lord and with my family, then I would step back.
If you are or have been a small business owner, you know that it is a 24/7 job. When you aren’t physically involved, you’re mentally involved. There is always something you can do better, something you can be doing, or someplace you can be. My business, even though it was on the smaller side, began to take over and so my household suffered. And when I say household, I mean the people in my house (ok- and my house itself!). I am the wife (a.k.a. ministry assistant) of a youth pastor (who happens to be in seminary so I am therefore editor-in-chief), a mom of 3 younger children (can you say 3 classrooms in 2 different schools?), and, since my husband is a youth pastor, we do not have the luxury of having a lawn man (I am the lawn woman), a maid (that’s me too), a chef (once again, my job), financial manager (I’m terrible with numbers, but ended up with that job as well), and – my favorite- laundry mat (the NEVER ending task!) So by the time I was finished with my hummus business, I still had all the above tasks to complete which meant that the most important roles I play – wife and mom – were left for the end of my day and the last remaining ounce of energy I had. That is not the way God intended for a wife and mom to be, so I knew I heard Him loud and clear when He spoke to me about moving on. It was at that moment that I was at total peace about downsizing. It was after speaking to my husband, my mom, and a close friend, that I felt a huge sense of relief come over me.
I have learned so much from my business start-up and growth. I have met so many wonderful people and built some incredible relationships. It has been exciting, it has been discouraging, and it has been an experience that I will never forget.
Thank you to each of you who have encouraged me, bought from me, spread the word about my hummus, and have made my first business endeavor a memorable one! I appreciate you more than you will ever know!
For those of you that are still wanting to purchase my hummus, it will only be available at the shop at 1280 Sarno Rd.(across from Harbor City Elem.)- no more retail spots or farmer’s markets.A big thank you to The Bald Strawberry and Flour & Spice Boutique for taking me under their wings and allowing me to continue to sell at their spot! If you are looking to make a purchase of multiple containers, please contact me first so I can make sure the flavors you want are there. I will be at the Indialantic Fresh Market at Nance Park Saturday, August 3rd from 8:00-1:00. This will be my final farmer’s market appearance. Come by, see me, and say “hi” and “goodbye”. I look forward to serving you personally one last time!

Lemon Ginger Hummus – Brought to You by Summer!

lemonadeWelcome Lemon Ginger Sweet Hummus to my line up of flavors! Inspired by summer and my LOVE of all things lemon, this particular combination of lemon and ginger was sparked in my mind when my daughter, Anna, ordered lemonade ginger frozen yogurt at one of our local joints, Alpine Yogurt, in Satellite Beach. I was seriously surprised that she chose this flavor over all the other options, and after taking a taste of it myself, I understood why!

This wonderful marriage of the sweet golden raisins, the tartness of the lemons, and the tanginess of the ginger creates what I think is my favorite hummus thus far! I will only be offering this at the markets as of right now until I get my “official” labels so I can place them in Downtown Produce and The Green Turtle. Find me this Friday at the NEW Indialantic Market at Nance Park from 2-6 PM (Don’t forget – Bring your quarters for parking)  or at the Melbourne Beach Farmer’s Market on May 4th from 9-3 PM. You can also contact me directly to order.

Slow and Steady

Spiny-Softshell-Turtle-Photos

Being a small business owner ain’t for wimps. Being a small business owner with three young kids and with a husband in the ministry and in seminary is definitely not for wimps! So much so that there have been numerous times that I’ve thought about stopping my hummus business. I never want it to take over my role as a wife and mom, and juggling all my roles can be a bit overwhelming. (Especially as my husband and kids have battled sickness multiple times over the past month!)

Every business has its busy season and slow season. Because I can not devote massive amounts of time to promoting my product, I have had a bit of a lull in the retail end of my hummus – yet another reason for me mull over whether or not to continue. As I was running yesterday morning and allowing my mind to contemplate all of this, I literally was praying and deciding about whether or not to trudge ahead during this slow time when I looked ahead and saw a large softshell turtle crossing the street. “Slow and steady wins the race” immediately entered my mind. God used this just to confirm to me that I am right where He wants me to be. I will always place Him first, my family next, and ministry third. When it comes to my business, I will do my best with the time that I have. If that means I stay “super small” so I can produce the best product I can, so be it. If that means I slowly grow bigger while maintaining quality, great! Whatever God has for me is what I want. Thanks for your loyalty, for your ‘word of mouth’ promotion, and your patience! See you Saturday at the Melbourne Beach Farmer’s Market!

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Cor. 10:31
