As a wife and mom, I strive to feed my family healthy and nutritious foods so we can work and play to the best of our abilities. As I was feeding apple slices and peanut butter to my kids one summer afternoon, the wheels in my head started turning, and I  decided to try making a sweet hummus and came up with a yummy creation- Cinnamon Raisin Hummus! From that, several other flavors evolved and I began to sell them to family, friends, and friends of friends. Now my product is available at Downtown Produce in Melbourne as well as The Melbourne Beach Market. About twice a month, you can find me at the Brevard County Farmer’s Market at Wickham Park on Thursdays from 3:00-7:00 PM.

All my hummus flavors are gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, and vegan-friendly!

My Small Business

My oldest, Aleyah, recently asked me what I do with the money that I make from my hummus. I was happy to report that the money I earn from my sales goes towards paying for her and her sister’s ballet tuition. According to the 3/50 Project, for every $100 spent in locally-owned business, $68 returns to the community! I love selling my sweet hummus because it promotes whole and clean eating, it provides me with the means to allow my girls to dance, and I know that I am giving back to my community!

Diet – (n) The food you eat

After fasting from my blog, I return with a link to a study that shows the importance of what you eat- which is the core of my eating “beliefs”.

We all are on a diet. A diet is what you eat on a consistent basis, not a temporary change in what you eat in order to lose weight.

While you can count calories to lose weight, drinking a 140 calories can of soda doesn’t even compare nutritionally to the 140 calories in 1 1/2 cups of grapes.  Soda: no nutritional value vs. Grapes: high in Vitamin C, K, and manganese. If you aren’t eating the right foods, then you aren’t feeding your body what it needs to maintain energy, stay disease-free, and maintain proper organ function. So check out the study conducted by Preventive Medicine Research Institute and read how 35 years of study show the significance of eating the foods that fuel your body rather than those that drain your body.

Prayers We Didn’t Expect to Pray

I am still fasting from blogging during our church’s 40 Days of Prayer and Fasting, but I felt led to share this story. Just over a week ago, my 4 yr old nephew, John Michael, went in for a CT scan after weeks of headaches. The following morning he was undergoing surgery to remove a brain tumor. We are thankful that the mass is non-cancerous, but we are truly blessed to know that prayers were lifted up to the Lord from all over the globe! Here is a post from Caring Bridge that my sister-in-law wrote just a couple of days ago, and I knew I needed to share it with you:

A week ago today I handed my little boy over to a team of surgeons, anesthesiologists and nurses.  All of my common sense said I should have lost it. But I can truly say that I experienced a peace that passes understanding. For six and half hours, we waited while they worked with skilled hands on our precious boy. I am so thankful for those of you who came to the hospital and prayed and those who prayed from afar. We felt your prayers. God used Dr. Smith and his team to heal my little boy. It is hard to believe it was just a week ago. This week was long and hard but the Lord sustained us. There were moments yesterday where it felt like things were almost ‘normal’ (whatever that looks like)

Overall we had a great day- we did lots of resting. John Michael even played a little bit and worked on his walking. He is ready to be back to normal but I know it will take a while.

Mark is putting up a fence in the backyard so I don’t have to worry about our puppy Lolly getting out. I also know that physical work is part of his therapy in dealing with all this. I know for me this caringbridge site has been a huge help so I know the need to do something.

Please pray for all our strength to return, for peaceful nights- JM is a little off with night and day because of all our time in the hospital, and pray for COMPLETE HEALING! We are so thankful for all your prayers.

My prayer is that during your time of prayer for us that God draws you to himself. I am thankful that I serve a God who sacrificed himself for me. I know that there isn’t any kind of pain that I feel that He hasn’t experienced.  I pray you know this God. We love you all.

Follow ’40 Days of Prayer & Fasting”

The other day I said I was fasting from blogging (and I still am except for this quick invite). If you would like to join me as I follow my church’s daily prayer and verses, ‘like’ First Baptist Church of Indialantic on Facebook, and you will see each day’s prayer posted.

My Daily Bread

This daily bread I am writing about is not whole wheat, oat, whole grain, or rye. I am speaking of God’s Word. Today my church began 40 days of fasting and prayer. Fasting consists of giving up something and replacing the time you spend on that activity with seeking the Lord through prayer and reading the Bible. I feel that God has led me to fast from blogging which saddens me in a sense because I love to share all that I learn about health and nutrition with others. But I am excited as well as I know that God will speak to me and move around me as I focus more on Him. So for the next 40 days, I will be praying for my marriage, my children, my family, my church family, my children’s schools, my friends, my country, and anything else the Lord places on my heart. And I will be delving more deeply into His Word. I pray that all my readers will continue to strive to stay active and eat clean so you can serve and love others to the best of your ability, and so you can be a shining example to others around you! I look forward to writing again on November 21st- just in time for all those holiday recipes, tips, and encouragement!

My Sleepy Time Energy Shot

Chia seeds are an excellent source of energy. They are full of fiber and good fats. Drinking 1 oz of tart cherry juice twice a day has shown to have a significant role in maintaining healthy sleep patterns since these cherries are naturally high in melatonin. I do this “shot” in the morning and then just take a swing of cherry juice in the afternoon.

Tart Cherry Chia Shot

1 oz tart cherry juice

2-3 teaspoons chia seeds

Pour juice into a glass and add chia seeds. Allow to stand several minutes to let the seeds soften. I use a spoon to eat the seeds first and then drink the rest.

Also try my Cherry Vanilla Granola. Oats are another natural source of melatonin.

My Organic Facial – Ahhhhhhhhhhh!

I have been keeping my schedule as clutter-free as possible the past few weeks so that I could get “all my ducks in a row” for the beginning of my hummus-making career. I know life is about to get somewhat crazy, so today I sent all the kids off to school, the husband off to play golf (he was devastated I’m sure), and me off to run the causeway and then indulge in an organic facial.
I recently met a friend of my cousin-in-law who owns the Blue Morpho Organic Skinspa in Indialantic. Kate purchased some hummus from me and she showed me around her spa when I delivered the hummus to her. Last week, she gave a presentation to me and a couple of friends on what she does and the benefits of her services, the products she uses, and the foods that are vital to healthy skin. Here are three of the products that she uses and recommends:

Naturopathica Holistic Health

Tamahra’s Secret

Sequoia Beauty

My 45 minute facial included cleansing, a mask, a serum, eye cream, and all the pampering that comes with it- including a foot massage! She told me there was no rush and to take my time getting up, so I was tempted to stay right there and take a nap for the rest of the afternoon. 🙂
I know you’re thinking that this facial probably cost me an arm and a leg, but she charges a very reasonable $45. She also offers a 75 minute and a 90 minute facial. So if you are in need of a gift for someone or yourself, please contact Kate and schedule a facial with her. You won’t be disappointed, and you (and your skin) will be renewed!
Thank you Kate for sharing your talent and expertise with our community!

My Favorite Foods of Fall

It’s officially fall, but here in Florida our only hint that autumn has come upon us is the pumpkin lattes at the coffee shops. In order to make it even more “fally”, I like to make meals and treats that encompass the earthly flavors that remind me of cool weather. Here are some of my favorites that I hope you’ll try:

Pumpkin Pancakes

Pumpkin Muffins

Spiced Cereal Mix

Sweet Potumpkin Squares

Apple Pie Smoothie

Spiced Apple Crisp

Apple Coffee Cake

Black and Orange Chili

Sweet Potato Home Fries

If you make one of these, let me know how you like it. If you’ve already tried one of these, leave a comment to let others know which one(s) you like!

Pea and Almond Pesto

20120918-150938.jpg
When my basil gets overgrown, I make a batch of pesto, use some for one of our meals, and them divide the rest and freeze it. This time I utilized another freezer staple- sweet peas. In place of the traditional (and expensive) pine nuts, I used almonds because that is what I had on hand. I also used a bit of broth in conjunction with the olive oil so we get the health benefits of the oil but also cut down a bit on the calories.

1 cup Fresh basil
1 cup frozen peas, defrosted
1/4 cup Olive oil, divided in half
1/2 cup Broth
1/3  cup nutritional yeast
1/4 cup Almonds
2-3 garlic cloves
Pepper to taste

Place all ingredients except one half of the oil into a food processor. Process on high and slowly add remaining olive oil until you reach the desired consistency.
