1 Route, 2 Views – A Look at the Year Ahead

While training for the marathon, my sister-in-law and I sometimes met at a park where we were able to vary our route in order to complete the scheduled long run for that week. For our 14-milers, we ran a 7-mile circle twice.  We would start at 5:30 or so in the morning, and the first part of our runs were done in the dark. You never knew if the dark spot you were stepping into was a pile of leaves, just some dirt, a muddy puddle, or something a little more messy! During the beginning of our second trip around one day, she commented on how it was like a whole new route since the sun had appeared and had begun to light our way.

This observation triggered a thought in my mind: We are all on this journey of life, but which route are you racing down- the Lighted path or the dark one? You are either running it with or without God. With purpose, or aimlessly. Knowing where you are heading, or wondering where you’ll wind up.

As 2012 begins, my prayer is that the steps of your life are illuminated by God’s Word (Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Ps. 119:105). While God does not reveal to us all that lay ahead in our path, we can trust that He will make our paths straight (Prov. 3:5-6) when we keep our focus on Him- the immovable focal point! May God’s love compel you in all that you do in this upcoming year, and may He receive all the glory for what will be accomplished in and through you! Happy New Year to you and your family!

This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us. 1 John 1:5-10

A Little R&R for Mr. and Mrs. Claus

Scott and I just returned today from a 3-day mini vacation in Orlando WITHOUT the kids! It was a much needed respite after a long and busy fall. We try to get away as a couple at least once a year, and it is always worth the effort and money it takes to get out of town. This particular trip was a birthday present for me funded in part by my mom and in-laws. They also split the duty of caring for the three kids so, needless to say, we are thankful that God has blessed us with wonderful parents who are even more wonderful grandparents!

Another added bonus for us was the free meals that we had thanks to the generosity of restaurants that offer birthday greetings in the form of BOGO lunches and dinners! Here are the establishments that made our getaway delicious and inexpensive:

Sweet Tomatoes – I love making my own salad from their array of fresh vegetables and I had their tomato and spinach soup as well. Join “Club Veg” for their coupons.

Texas de Brazil – This was really one for my husband. I love their exotic salad bar, but I can only eat so much meat at this all-you-can-eat Brazilian-style steakhouse, so it is really a man’s place to go at that price. But with my free meal, it was worth the experience. The garlic-roasted sirloin was outstanding! (BTW- I just learned that sirloin is leaner than filet and has an extra 2 grams of protein per serving- a cheaper cut with better numbers!) Click on their site and join their “Rewards” program for the perks.

Maggiano’s Italian – This was our first time here, and is now one of my favorite spots. I had the Grilled Chicken Caprese Salad which I will be replicating here at home! Sign up to receive their e-mails and get $10 off a $30 purchase.

Benihana – Ahhhhh, sushi! I got the Spicy Tuna Roll, the Vegetable Roll, and the Rainbow Roll (all with brown rice) for FREE! I’m thinking this was my favorite meal… Click on “The Chef’s Table” to get the BOGO birthday deal.

First Watch – I love their Healthy Turkey Breakfast- an egg white omelet with turkey, feta, spinach, onions and tomatoes and served with fresh tomato slices and an english muffin. Order coffee, and they bring you a whole carafe 🙂 Join the Sun-e Club for discounts throughout the year.

While I enjoyed a brief getaway, I also enjoyed coming home to shouts of “Mommy!” and having the opportunity to tuck all three of my precious children into their beds on this cool night. These moments will be missed one day. I need to do a better job of relishing these times with the children that God has entrusted into our care.

How great is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you, which you bestow in the sight of men on those who take refuge in you. Psalm 31:19

National Exchange Pleasantries Day

I ran the causeway on this blustery Monday morning, and I am always surprised at how many people do not initiate any greeting or even have the courtesy to return one as we pass. I know exercise can be intense at times, but that is no excuse for not saying hello, giving a slight nod of the head, or even a quick smile. It’s even Christmas time and it is still difficult to get people to return a “Good Morning” salutation. So, since today is my birthday, I am taking the liberty of declaring this National Exchange Pleasantries Day. Thank you to those of you who do greet me and others as we traverse the roadways of our great land!

The Christmas Party Hop

‘Tis the season for parties! This weekend, I have three different Christmas parties that I will be attending. The holiday food table is a struggle for many, and keeping up with a hectic schedule is also a hurdle we must overcome during this time of year. I love Florida Hospital and their focus on healthy living. Their website is full of great information and resources. For tips on keeping on track with your eating, exercise, and mental health, check out Nutritionist Sheeri Flynt’s power point presentation for the seminar that she presents during this month.

My “Marathon” of Thank Yous

After 4 months of training, my first marathon is finished! Yesterday I surpassed my goal and came in at 4:17! While I was the one out hitting the pavement, I surely could not have done this without the sacrifice, dedication, and encouragement from others. So here is my “thank you” list:

  • To my husband – He likes to sleep in a bit more than me, and there were many times that he was up early with the kids while I was out running. It was just as much of a sacrifice on his part as it was on mine.
  • To my sister-in-law and training partner, Terri – Thanks for the vision and the long talks on our long runs ! Great job yesterday!!!
  • To my oldest, Aleyah – When Daddy didn’t hear Joel in the still-dark morning hours, she would go into his room and entertain him. That girl is definitely self-sufficient!
  • To my mom- Thanks for the post-race meal! Mom’s homemade veggie lasagna- yummy!!
  • To the man in the “I Dream of Jeannie” outfit at the mile 13 water break – The hairy chest under the pink Jeannie outfit was a much-needed, comical sight. You rock Mr.. Jeannie!!
  • To the little 7 or 8 year old boy around mile 15 – Thanks for the high five! What a way to encourage all of us!
  • To the man who ran tied to his blind friend – What dedication and selfless act of friendship! You definitely inspired me!!
  • Most of all, to Jesus – Thank you for creating the human body that is capable of doing such amazing feats! I am grateful for my health and the ability to accomplish what I set out to do. May I never forget the ultimate sacrifice made for me- your death on the cross. I pray that I will always “race” to become more like You.

For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. Phil. 1:6

With that, I must say that this will also be my last marathon. It was very taxing on my body, and I have listened to it along the way and know that this was a one-time stint for me. I am proud to say that I’ve completed a marathon, but just as proud to say that I know when my body has reached its limit. The half-marathon is a much more reasonable goal for me, and I look forward to completing one in the not-so-distant future.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving! May your day be filled with family, friends, and love!

Know that he LORD Himself is God ; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves ; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture. 4 Enter His gates with thanksgiving And His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him, bless His name. 5 For the LORD is good ; His lovingkindness is everlasting And His faithfulness to all generations. Psalm 100:3-5

As I Approach the Thanksgiving Table…

As I Approach the Thanksgiving Table…

  1. I make sure I am not starving. I keep up my regular, daily eating plan so that I do not overeat when it is dinner time.
  2. I plan. Because my diet and food desires have changed over the past several years, I don’t crave the extra-heavy sides and accompaniments on the grazing table. My typical meal is smoked turkey breast and a large salad. It is what I like and what I enjoy, so that is what I stick to. Then, I am able to enjoy one of my homemade desserts without feeling miserably full or terribly guilty.
  3. I bring my own healthy dishes if need be. I know that my stepdad will be smoking turkey and that my uncle will be bringing a large tossed salad, so I am set there. However, I am making a couple of desserts so I know that my after-dinner treat is clean and light.
  4. I don’t let one day dictate my success or failure. Since I very rarely eat dessert, I will not allow this one meal to make me feel like a failure. I will savor my Thanksgiving dinner and know that this one treat will not disrupt my lifestyle of healthy eating.

Here are some other stay-healthy tips from the Cleveland Clinic for all the upcoming holidays:

  • Keep up with your regular exercise routine, and stick to a regular schedule of healthy, nutritious meals.
  • Get plenty of sleep each night.
  • Find a few minutes to do something fun each day.
  • Make sure your holiday goals are realistic.
  • Enjoy the season with people who are supportive.
  • Take a break from your hectic schedule when you need it.

Happy Thanksgiving!!

A Runner’s Pulse, But a Dancer’s Heart

The nurse at the doctor’s office this past week said that I had a runner’s pulse. While I am proud of my running career, I must say that dancing is my first love . I took 8 years of ballet and jazz, and after a 20 year hiatus, I have the opportunity to join my girls in the production of The Nutcracker. Today was our first practice and a mix of anxiety and excitement followed me to the dance floor. I enjoyed each and every moment, and I don’t think that I stopped smiling during that 1 and a half hour period!
If time and money were no object, ballet would be my first choice for physical activity. Maybe one day when my kids are all in school, I will seize the chance to once again find my place at the barre. I wonder how many of us are anxious about returning to a sport we once loved, or fearful of trying something that we’ve always dreamed of one day doing…

From Couch Potato to Couch Warrior

Fitness Magazine’s, The Couch Workout, is a great way to incorporate some exercise into a morning or evening of TV watching. Like to spend Saturday and Sunday afternoons watching some football? Use this one-piece-of-equipment workout as you cheer on your favorite team. (BTW- My Seminoles play BC tonight. Go ‘Noles!) Use your “me” time to relax and tone! A resistance band can be bought at any area sports store or go to Amazon and spend about $15 for one. It’s a minor investment for all its benefits.
