Clean and Homemade BBQ Sauce
Tonight, since it has been a warm winter day, called for grilled BBQ chicken. Here is the BBQ sauce that I made to bast our bone-in breasts:
-
1 cup organic ketchup
-
1 Tablespoon tomato paste
-
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
-
2 teaspoons honey
-
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
-
1 teaspoon garlic powder
-
1 teaspoon onion powder
-
1/2 teaspoon cumin
-
1/2 teaspoon paprika
-
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
-
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Mix all ingredients together. Use immediately or store in an airtight container for 1 week in fridge.
Rub meat first with Mexican spice mix for an even more intense flavor. Don’t forget to add sauce towards the ending of grilling so the sugars don’t burn your chicken!

Wintery Shepherd’s Pie with Sweet Potatoes
My family loves Shepherd’s pie! I “reinvented” it in order to satisfy my “sweet potato” tooth. I love the mushrooms and rosemary in this- it gives it an earthy and warm taste!
-
1 lb ground lean turkey
-
2 large carrots, diced
-
1 large celery stalk, diced
-
1/2 onion, minced
-
8 oz mushrooms, sliced
-
2 garlic cloves, minced
-
2 tablespoons fresh rosemary leaves
-
1/3 cup beef broth
-
1 Tablespoon tomato paste
-
salt and pepper to taste
-
2 lbs sweet potatoes
-
1 teaspoon garlic powder
-
1/4 plain yogurt or low-fat sour cream
-
1 tablespoon Earth Balance butter spread
-
dash of salt, pepper
-
Freshly grated Parmesan cheese
Cook sweet potatoes in microwave or oven. You can peel them or leave the skins on- your choice! Allow to cool some. Mash in a medium bowl with garlic powder, yogurt or sour cream, Earth Balance butter and salt and pepper. Set aside.
Brown turkey in pan over medium heat. Remove and saute carrots, celery, onion, mushrooms, and garlic in the same pan for 5-7 minutes. Toss turkey back into pan and add tomato paste, broth, salt and pepper, and fresh rosemary. Mix and pour into a 9×13″ pan. Top with sweet potato mixture and then grate Parmesan cheese over the top. Bake at 350 for about 20 minutes. Turn on broiler for 3-4 minutes if cheese is not browned to your liking when cooking times ends.

Sweet Hummus Muffins ~ 3 Ingredients!
I just made a half of a dozen Spiced Fig muffins that took 3 minutes and 3 ingredients to create! Since my sweet hummus is chickpea based, these ground up legumes act as a flour. The hummus already has the spices to add the wonderful flavor to them, so all that is left to make the muffins are an egg and baking powder.
-
1 cup Spiced Fig Hummus
-
1 egg, beaten
-
1 teaspoon baking powder
Mix all ingredients together and fill 6 muffin cups about 1/2 – 2/3 full. Bake at 350 for 18-20 minutes. Allow to cool. Add chocolate chips, nuts or raisins to batter if desired.
Swap out the Spiced Fig Hummus with Gingerbread Hummus for a holiday treat!

As a wife and mom, I strive to feed my family healthy and nutritious foods so we can work and play to the best of our abilities. As I was feeding apple slices and peanut butter to my kids one summer afternoon, the wheels in my head started turning, and I decided to try making a sweet hummus and came up with a yummy creation- Cinnamon Raisin Hummus! From that, several other flavors evolved and I began to sell them to family, friends, and friends of friends. My Small Business
My oldest, Aleyah, recently asked me what I do with the money that I make from my hummus. I was happy to report that the money I earn from my sales goes towards paying for her and her sister’s ballet tuition. According to the 3/50 Project, for every $100 spent in locally-owned business, $68 returns to the community! I love selling my sweet hummus because it promotes whole and clean eating, it provides me with the means to allow my girls to dance, and I know that I am giving back to my community!

My Sleepy Time Energy Shot
Chia seeds are an excellent source of energy. They are full of fiber and good fats. Drinking 1 oz of tart cherry juice twice a day has shown to have a significant role in maintaining healthy sleep patterns since these cherries are naturally high in melatonin. I do this “shot” in the morning and then just take a swing of cherry juice in the afternoon.
Tart Cherry Chia Shot
1 oz tart cherry juice
2-3 teaspoons chia seeds
Pour juice into a glass and add chia seeds. Allow to stand several minutes to let the seeds soften. I use a spoon to eat the seeds first and then drink the rest.
Also try my Cherry Vanilla Granola. Oats are another natural source of melatonin.

My Favorite Foods of Fall
It’s officially fall, but here in Florida our only hint that autumn has come upon us is the pumpkin lattes at the coffee shops. In order to make it even more “fally”, I like to make meals and treats that encompass the earthly flavors that remind me of cool weather. Here are some of my favorites that I hope you’ll try:
Pumpkin Pancakes
Pumpkin Muffins
Spiced Cereal Mix
Sweet Potumpkin Squares
Apple Pie Smoothie
Spiced Apple Crisp
Apple Coffee Cake
Black and Orange Chili
Sweet Potato Home Fries
If you make one of these, let me know how you like it. If you’ve already tried one of these, leave a comment to let others know which one(s) you like!

Pea and Almond Pesto

When my basil gets overgrown, I make a batch of pesto, use some for one of our meals, and them divide the rest and freeze it. This time I utilized another freezer staple- sweet peas. In place of the traditional (and expensive) pine nuts, I used almonds because that is what I had on hand. I also used a bit of broth in conjunction with the olive oil so we get the health benefits of the oil but also cut down a bit on the calories.
1 cup Fresh basil
1 cup frozen peas, defrosted
1/4 cup Olive oil, divided in half
1/2 cup Broth
1/3 cup nutritional yeast
1/4 cup Almonds
2-3 garlic cloves
Pepper to taste
Place all ingredients except one half of the oil into a food processor. Process on high and slowly add remaining olive oil until you reach the desired consistency.
